The FIDE Candidates Tournament kicked off on March 16, 2020. However, it had to be abruptly stopped 11 days later when the Russian government announced the closure of air traffic with other countries, amid a rapidly escalating coronavirus pandemic.
For the whole year the world was waiting for it to be resumed. After a long wait and thorough preparations with all safety measures taken the tournament which will define the challenger of the Magnus Carlsen's throne will be resumed on April 19 at Hyatt Regency Hotel (address: 8, Borisa Yeltsina Street).
The technical start of the tournament will take place at 3:30 p.m. (UTC +5). Apart from players and arbiters the playing hall will be visited by the honorary guests:
- Yevgeny Kuyvashev, governor of the Sverdlovsk region;
- Arkady Dvorkovich, FIDE President;
- Anatoly Karpov, State Duma member, multiple times world chess champion, chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Sverdlovsk Region Chess Federation;
- Andrey Simanovsky, founder and owner of Sima-Land, General Partner of the FIDE Candidates Tournament, President of the Sverdlovsk Region Chess Federation;
Before the clock will be started, Director of the Candidates Tournament Albert Stepanyan will make his welcome speech. Anthems of the Russian Federation and FIDE will be played, participants and guests will be greeted by Yevgeny Kuyvashev, governor of the Sverdlovsk region; Arkady Dvorkovich, FIDE President; Anatoly Karpov, multiple times world chess champion; and Andrey Simanovsky, President of the Sverdlovsk Region Chess Federation. After this the grandmasters be invited on stage and clock will be started by the tournament's chief arbiter Nebojsha Baralic.
