Ian Nepomniachtchi (born July 14, 1990, in Bryansk) is a Russian GM since 2007. He is the 2010 European champion, 2010 Russian champion, and a two-time winner of team world championships as part of team Russia (2013 and 2019).
He is number four in the world and number one in Russia.
He learned to play chess at the age of four and a half years. He made the first-category norm at the age of seven, and the candidate master norm in 1997. He took the U10/U12 and U16 European Championships in 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2005, and the U18 Russian championship in 2004.
He would repeatedly outplay Magnus Carlsen at youth competitions, while also outscoring the world champion 2:1 in in the tournaments as of today.
Having won the Aeroflot Open in 2008, he qualified into the international tournament in Dortmund, where he finished in the share of 2-5 places. Ian is the 2009 Russian Cup finalist.
He is a bronze medalist of the 2017 World Rapid Championship.
He earned his ticket to Yekaterinburg at the last moment after triumphing at the final stage of the Grand Prix series in Jerusalem.
