The FIDE Candidates Tournament in Yekaterinburg opened on March 16, 2020, but FIDE was forced to halt the tournament at the half stage, in response to the deteriorating Coronavirus situation in Russia at the time.
The tournament resumes now, amid great expectation, with the remaining 7 games being played from 19 to 28 April 2021.
After the first half, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (France) and Ian Nepomniachtchi (Russia) are in the lead with 4.5 points out of 7. Fabiano Caruana (USA), Anish Giri (Netherlands), Wang Hao (China) and Alexander Grischuk (Russia) are one point behind the leaders, with they have 3.5 points. The youngest competitor, Kirill Alekseenko of Russia, and Ding Liren (China), scored 2.5 points each.
The winner of the Candidates Tournament will have the right to compete for the chess crown against Magnus Carlsen (Norway). The match for the world title is scheduled to take place in Dubai (UAE) from November 24 to December 16, 2021.
